Top Picks: TV

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon: Season 3 (September 8)

Still on the ultimate Contiki Tour of Death, TWD’s fan faves Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride) peaced out of France and are on their way to England, meaning things in this successful spin-off might get very 28 Years Later very quickly. I pray that The Clash’s ‘London Calling’ is not employed as the world’s most cliched and obvious needle-drop as our buddies roll into town.

With an upcoming fourth season already greenlit, this series has admirably worked with more new textures and twists than the original zombie slog from which it originated. Last season involved bioluminescent walkers (Euro-rave anyone?) and psychedelic bat guano, so who knows what might go down in jolly old Blighty?

The Hack: Season 1 (Coming Soon)

No release date locked in just yet for this hard-hitting British drama, based on scandalous true events, but it should hack into your Stan homepage sometime this month. A trio of sensational screen talent bolsters the cast, including Toby Jones, Robert Carlyle, and David Tennant as journo Nick Davies who uncovered the widespread phone hacking perpetrated by News of the World.

Anything that shits all over Rupert Murdoch and News Corp’s unethical cover-ups is alright by us, and as this story unfolds across seven episodes and a decade of headlines, seeing it dramatised by such a fantastic cast should breathe new life and pathos into a dense and complex case.

Force of Nature: The Dry 2 (September 8)

It seems like every prestige-y Australian story these days is about some sleuth uncovering the dark truth of a small-town mystery, in a remote locale such as a thirsty desert setting or foreboding woodlands. Eric Bana has ticked off both environs in his role as Agent Aaron Falk, returning in this sequel to get to the bottom of a work retreat gone horribly wrong. Featuring Jacqueline McKenzie and Anna Torv, the frostier, foresty follow-up to 2020’s outback noir The Dry takes place in the Victorian mountain ranges, with Falk trying to find out what happened to his informant after she disappears on a corporate hike.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s another adaptation of Jane Harper’s novels on the way: maybe Falk could enjoy some surf next time around?

Oppenheimer (September 22)

Storming the Oscars and exploding cinemas two years back, Christopher Nolan’s biopic of the father of the atomic bomb really disarmed me, I must admit. Nolan’s period pictures have always been more interesting than his sci-fi, IMO, and here he perfectly synthesises the weight of devastating human history with technically brilliant, nuclear spectacle.

The cast featured just about every dude in Hollywood, with Cillian Murphy picking up a Best Actor statuette as the haunted, groundbreaking scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer: an ideas man, by every measure, more than a humanist…until it’s too late and somebody’s pushed the button.

Tinā (September 28)

An achingly sentimental weepie grounded by a stellar lead performance. Anapela Polataivao is a Samoan teacher struggling to start anew in Christchurch, after losing her daughter in the city’s devastating earthquakes. Difficult as it is, she finds reason and inspiration in teaching a snooty school choir, connecting with lonely young students who remind her of her own kid and dodging attempts from elitist higher-ups to shut down her efforts. Filled with music and heaps of heart, it’s a satisfying debut from director Miki Magasiva and a gleaming showcase for Polataivoa’s warmth and empathy.
